Preamble:
It has been a long-standing tradition that ‘Samskrit Saptah’ (Sanskrit Week) is celebrated during the first week of August every year. This year (2025), the Dept. of Sanskrit and Philosophy is celebrating this annual event on 6,7,8,9,11,12 August 2025 with a 2-hour programme each day. While the detailed programme is being worked out, tentative items of the programme to highlight the variety, richness, intensity and extensity of this Devabhasha, Sanskrit, that forms the backbone of the thousands of years of Bharatiya Jnana-Samskriti Parampara (Indian Spiritual and Cultural Tradition). Swami Vivekananda’s eulogy of Sanskrit is well-known—we present some of his famous quotes in this regard:
- Sanskrit and prestige go together in India.
- The very sound of Sanskrit words gives a prestige and a power and a strength to the race.
- This Sanskrit language is so intricate, the Sanskrit of the Vedas is so ancient, and the Sanskrit philology so perfect, that any amount of discussion can be carried on for ages in regard to the meaning of one word.
RKMVERI, established by Ramakrishna Mission in the holy precincts of Belur Math as prophesied by Swami Vivekananda who said: “The spiritual impact which has come to Belur [Math] will last fifteen hundred years and it will be a great University. Do not think I imagine it; I see it,” has laid great emphasis on Sanskrit education and research since inception and its vibrant Dept. of Sanskrit and Philosophy, conducts inter alia a unique Five-year Integrated (B.A.Hons.+M.A.) programme in Sanskrit wherein Sanskrit is taught fully in the medium of Sanskrit—teaching, interactions, discussions, examinations, all these and much more—are all fully in Sanskrit, so much so the students joining this programme with little knowledge of Sanskrit get groomed as scholars of high standard within these years of study and go on further to pursue research for their Ph.D. degree. The journey that began nearly twenty years ago with just 3 students on rolls has been continuing unabated, having now reached nearly 108 students and scholars: 75 students (both boys and girls) in the Five-Year Integrated (B.A.Hons.+M.A.) programme and 28 Ph.D. research scholars. Over the past two decades, our Dept. of Sanskrit has contributed to the pool of high level Sanskrit scholars in the country—fluent in spoken Sanskrit and flawless in written Sanskrit—nearly 180 scholars who have specialized in Panini Vyakarana (grammar), Vedanta (Advaita), Nyaya, etc.—no mean contribution to the community of high level scholars whose number is dwindling by the day.
Given below is a tentative list of subjects that will be discussed during the ‘Samskrit Saptah’ (Sanskrit Week). Inviting all the admirers and lovers of Sanskrit (samskrita-premika-vrinda) to participate in large numbers and with kind regards to all,
