Upcoming Mathematics talks - December 09

December 7th, 2009

Mathematics Seminars

Venue: Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University, School of Mathematical Sciences

Date: 7 December 2009
Time: 4 pm
Speaker: Ram Murty, FRSC
Affiliation: Queen's University, Canada

Title: Ramanujan and the zeta function
This will be a semi-popular talk addressed at a general audience.
Abstract:
In his unpublished notebooks, Ramanujan derived some interesting formulas for special values of the Riemann zeta function at odd arguments. These notebooks were published by TIFR in 1957 and are a valuable source of mathematical inspiration. In this talk, we will give a general introduction to Ramanujan and his life, and proceed to discuss these formulas in his notebooks in the context of modern mathematics.

Mathematics Colloquium Talk:

Date: 8 December 2009
Time: 4 pm
Speaker: Ram Murty, FRSC
Affiliation: Queen's University, Canada

Title: Summation of Infinite Series
Abstract:
We will consider the summation over integers whose n-th term is given by A(n)/B(n) where A(x), B(x) are polynomials. We will discuss how this can evaluated in closed form. If A(x), B(x), are polynomials with algebraic coefficients, we will discuss the transcendental nature of the sum.

Date: 9 December 2009
Speaker: Ram Murty, FRSC
Affiliation: Queen's University, Canada
Abstract:
Prof. Ram Murthy will also give a talk at INSA (which is a short version of talk 1) on the 9th.
