Background

Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Morabadi, Ranchi was started in 1927 as a branch centre of Ramakrishna Mission. In early sixties when the adjoining districts of Ranchi were in the grip of severe drought, this centre organised a distress relief. On completion of the relief work, the monks who were engaged in the work gave serious thought to evolving a lasting solution to the problem. It soon became clear to them that unless the farmers were empowered with appropriate and need-based technology supported by group action, they would never be able to overcome such adverse situations in future. The result of their thought was the establishment of a novel movement in rural development called ‘Divyayan’ (meaning ‘Divine Way’). Divyayan, a unique Integrated Rural Development model with a residential training centre for tribal and rural youth was conceived and launched by Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Morabadi, Ranchi, in 1969.

About Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra

Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Divyayan (‘Divyayan’ meaning ‘Divine Way’) is a novel integrated rural and tribal development model, started in 1969. Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, recognized Divyayan as a Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in 1977. Divyayan received the best KVK award from ICAR for 1996-97.
Divyayan is now well known in Jharkhand for its multifarious rural and tribal development activities— educational and cultural, health care, various training programmes which include horticulture, poultry and duckery, dairy, farm machinery, carpentry, bee-keeping, fishery, mushroom training, mali training, seed multiplication, organic manure and integrated pest management, soil testing, vermi-compost, etc. Divyayan possesses a fairly vast agriclture and horticulture farms, measuring nearly 146 acres.

Infrastructural and Other Facilities

The Ashrama has a well-established infrastructure—Academic buildings, experimental farms, demonstration units like dairy, poultry, fisheries and bee-keeping. It also has a modernized soil testing laboratory both for macro and micro-nutrients, a biotechnology unit including vermiculture, production of mushroom-spawn and blue green algae etc. Further details:

• An Agricultural Engineering workshop is well setup.

  A well-equipped soil testing laboratory for analyzing macro- and micro- plant-nutrients has been set up. There is also a biotechnology unit including vermiculture, production of mushroom-spawn and blue green algae etc.
• There is a spacious auditorium with a capacity of nearly 310 persons, equipped with audio-visual and video-conferencing facilities.

  The Ashrama has its own library with reading room facilities. This contains with more than 25,000 books, journals and 15 periodicals in its possession. The university library is a part of the main library.
• There is a big seminar room/hall fitted with modern electronic gadgets, which can accommodate about 200 persons.
• The demonstration unit of poultry has different breeds of layers and broilers. There are also duck and quail production units with hatcheries.
• A dairy farm with high yielding cross-bred animals is also functioning efficiently.
• Besides the existing experimental fa rm at Morabadi Ashrama, there are two more large experimental farms at Maheshpur and Getalsud situated at a distance of about 35 kms from Ranchi. Progeny orchards of different fruit plants and Green House facilities also exist in these experimental farms, where a lot of research trials and demonstrations on different crops and vegetables are conducted. Seed production programmes on potato and vegetables are conducted in these farms and adopted villages.

• Medical Facilities

  Ashrama has its own health centre for treatment of common ailments free of cost. Several renowned doctors are associated with the health centres and the students could get the benefit of their treatment and advice. Apart from the heath centre, there is a Government hospital located within 5 kms, where 24-hour emergency service is available.

• Broadband Connectivity and Tele-education

  Broadband internet connectivity help the students to get easy access to vast amounts of academic information, besides helping them to get the benefit of tele-education. Thanks to this facility, some classes are being conducted at Ranchi by experts stationed at Belur Math.
